Walk Away is one of my favourite tracks on the new album and it has been a very popular live song since I started performing it in 2018. I’m releasing it as a single on September 28 and I’ve just launched a video to promote it. You can see the video here.
I’m really pleased with the job done by Peter Salisbury in filming and editing this. The idea came from a line in the song – “every poker player knows the cards to play, the time to stay or walk away” – and we built up a nice little story from that idea. I didn’t have to look far to find the people to play the “villains” – the three card sharks are from our Darkey Kelly’s musical ensemble, in PJ Maher, Vinny Clohisey and Paul O’Toole. Two of the singers on the track, Cian O’Mahony and Ellen O’Mahony, play the “victim” and the bar-girl who tries to warn him of the peril he’s in. You’ll also get a glimpse of the wonderful string quartet recording the track (Aisling Bridgeman, Aine Gallagher, Suzanne Anglim and Claire Kinsella). The poker scenes were shot in Darkey Kelly’s and the string section in Hellfire Studios. Have a look and see what you think.
This is the second single from the album. I released “Go With You” in May and it made no 2 in the iTunes Singer-Songwriter Chart – just my luck to have Gavin James release a single on the same day and blow away any chance I had of making no 1. Maybe this time! If you’d like to help my chances, and have 69c to spare, go to iTunes or Apple Music, search for Tommy Keyes and you’ll find Walk Away available for pre-order. All pre-orders count towards the chart on the day the song is released.
Update: I’m delighted to say that there were loads of pre-orders and “Walk Away” did indeed hit the top spot!
